If you’ve just loaded into Scale Slimy Fish for the first time, the game can seem a little confusing. You’re given a basic fishing rod, a dull knife, and only a few dollars, but before long you’ll be catching better fish and upgrading your gear.

The gameplay loop is actually pretty relaxing once you understand how everything connects. Fish, scrape the scales, sell your catches, upgrade your equipment, and repeat. The better your tools become, the faster you’ll earn money and discover rarer fish.

Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

Scale Slimy Fish Beginner Guide – Earn Money, Upgrade Rods

Every new player begins with:

  • $10
  • Beginner Fishing Rod
  • Beginner Bait
  • Basic Knife
  • No Stars
  • No Fish Collection Progress

While there are Robux items available in the shop, you don’t need them to make steady progress. The game is completely playable as a free-to-play player if you upgrade your equipment in the right order.

Understanding the Main Menu

Before heading out to fish, it’s worth taking a quick look around.

You’ll find several important menus:

Rods

This is where you’ll equip and purchase stronger fishing rods.

Better rods improve important stats like:

  • Fishing depth
  • Luck
  • Strength

These upgrades let you catch better fish as you progress.

Baits

Different baits become available as you continue playing and can improve your fishing efficiency.

Knives

Knives are used during the scraping minigame.

Higher-quality knives make scraping easier and help you achieve more perfect cuts.

Fish Index

The Fish Index tracks every species you’ve discovered along with their rarity.

If you’re a completionist, this becomes a fun way to monitor your progress.

Titles

As you continue leveling and completing objectives, you’ll unlock new titles to customize your character.

How Fishing Works

Fishing is straightforward.

Simply press the Go Fishing button and head to the pier.

Cast your line and wait for a fish to bite.

Once you successfully catch a fish, it gets added to your inventory and is ready for scraping.

Early on you’ll mostly catch Common fish, but as your equipment improves you’ll start finding much better catches.

How the Scraping System Works

Unlike many fishing games, catching the fish is only half the process.

After every catch, you’ll need to scrape the fish to remove its scales.

This is where your knife becomes important.

During the scraping minigame:

  • Carefully remove the scales.
  • Avoid making unnecessary cuts.
  • Aim for Perfect scrapes whenever possible.

The better your scraping performance, the more valuable your fish becomes when sold.

If you rush the process, you’ll damage the fish and reduce its value.

Sell Your Fish for Money

After scraping is complete, head over to the selling area.

Selling your cleaned fish rewards you with cash that can be used for upgrades.

Even Common fish provide enough money to slowly improve your equipment, so don’t worry if your early catches aren’t particularly rare.

Every sale moves you one step closer to your next upgrade.

Upgrade Your Fishing Rod First

One of the smartest early investments is purchasing a better fishing rod.

For new players, the first major upgrade is the Toy Rod.

Compared to the Beginner Rod, it offers:

  • Greater fishing depth
  • Higher Luck
  • Increased Strength

The Beginner Rod only reaches a depth of 10, while the Toy Rod extends that to 30, allowing you to access better fishing spots and improve your chances of catching more valuable fish.

Although you’ll still only carry one fish at a time early on, the improved stats make every trip more rewarding.

Upgrade Your Knife After Your Rod

Once you’ve secured a better rod, your next priority should be replacing the basic knife.

The starting knife works, but it’s fairly dull.

As you scrape tougher fish, you’ll notice it becomes harder to consistently achieve Perfect results.

Buying a stronger knife makes the scraping minigame much smoother and increases the quality of your processed fish.

Even an inexpensive knife upgrade can noticeably improve your earnings over time.

Fish Rarities

The game features multiple fish rarities that you’ll gradually discover as you unlock stronger equipment.

Common fish are easy to find with beginner gear, but increasing your rod’s Luck and fishing depth gives you access to much rarer catches later in the game.

Checking your Fish Index regularly is a good way to see which species you’re still missing.

Best Early Progression Route

If you’re just starting, this upgrade order works well:

  1. Catch and scrape every fish.
  2. Sell all cleaned fish for cash.
  3. Buy the Toy Rod as soon as possible.
  4. Continue farming with your upgraded rod.
  5. Purchase a better knife.
  6. Repeat the process while saving for stronger rods.

Following this order helps you earn money faster without wasting cash on unnecessary purchases.

Beginner Tips

A few small habits can speed up your progression considerably:

  • Always scrape fish before selling them.
  • Try to earn Perfect scrapes whenever possible.
  • Upgrade your fishing rod before spending heavily on knives.
  • Replace your starter knife once scraping becomes difficult.
  • Check the Fish Index to track new discoveries.
  • Keep upgrading your rod’s depth and luck to unlock better fish.

Scale Slimy Fish keeps things simple, but that’s part of its charm. The gameplay loop of fishing, scraping, selling, and upgrading is easy to learn while still giving you a satisfying sense of progression.

For beginners, the biggest priority is upgrading your Fishing Rod first since it unlocks better catches much faster. Once you’ve done that, invest in a sharper knife to improve your scraping results and maximize your profits.

Stick with that upgrade path, and you’ll steadily work your way toward stronger rods, rarer fish, and much bigger payouts without needing to spend any Robux.
