If you’ve recently started exploring Soul Society in VV Ultimatum, chances are you’ve heard players talking about the Grey Hunter. While it’s considered an early-game field boss, don’t let that fool you. The fight can catch new players off guard, especially if you’re still getting comfortable with the game’s combat and deflection mechanics.

The good news is that Grey Hunter has a fairly simple moveset. Once you learn how each attack works and how to respond, the boss becomes much easier to handle. In this guide, I’ll walk you through where to find Grey Hunter, when it spawns, and the best strategies for defeating it consistently.

Where to Find Grey Hunter in VV Ultimatum

Grey Hunter is located in the Soul Society Outskirts region.

To reach the boss:

  1. Teleport to Soul Society Outskirts.
  2. Turn around from the teleport location.
  3. Run straight ahead.
  4. Continue until you arrive at an area filled with numerous torii gates and stone lanterns.
  5. This is the Grey Hunter spawn location.

The area is fairly easy to recognize once you see the large collection of traditional gates and lamps scattered throughout the zone.

Grey Hunter Spawn Time

One thing many players miss is that Grey Hunter does not remain active all the time.

The boss appears at:

20 minutes past every odd-numbered UTC hour.

Examples include:

  • 1:20 UTC
  • 3:20 UTC
  • 5:20 UTC
  • 7:20 UTC

If you arrive at the location and don’t see the boss, you may simply need to wait for the next spawn window.

Grey Hunter Boss Overview

Grey Hunter is designed as a reaction-based encounter. The boss only uses a handful of attacks, but each one requires a different response.

Players who try to spam attacks without paying attention usually end up taking unnecessary damage.

The fight becomes much easier when you focus on reading animations and reacting correctly.

Attack #1: Poison Spew

This attack creates a poisonous area around Grey Hunter.

How to deal with it:

  • Immediately dash away from the boss.
  • Avoid staying in melee range.
  • Do not attempt to counter or deflect it.

Many new players take damage here because they instinctively try to block everything. Poison Spew is one of the few attacks where creating distance is the correct answer.

Attack #2: Claw Combo

The claw attacks are actually one of your biggest opportunities to gain an advantage.

How to deal with it:

  • Deflect using Right Mouse Button on PC.
  • Use L2/LT on console.
  • Time your deflections carefully.

Successful deflections increase the boss’s posture meter. Once the posture meter fills, Grey Hunter becomes vulnerable and takes a significant amount of damage.

If you’re comfortable with parrying, this attack can shorten the fight considerably.

Attack #3: Jump Slam

This is easily Grey Hunter’s most dangerous move.

The boss will leap into the air before crashing back down onto the battlefield.

How to deal with it:

  • Watch for the jump animation.
  • Move away immediately.
  • Do not stay underneath the boss.

Getting hit by the slam can remove a large portion of your health bar and send your character flying backward. If you’re already low on health, this attack can end the fight instantly.

Attack #4: Cero Beam

Compared to the jump slam, the Cero Beam is much easier to avoid.

How to deal with it:

If you’re close to Grey Hunter:

  • Circle around the boss.

If you’re far away:

  • Strafe sideways.
  • Keep moving until the beam ends.

Standing still is the easiest way to get hit, so maintain movement throughout the attack.

Best Builds for Grey Hunter

Most builds can clear this encounter without major issues, but ranged-focused characters have a noticeably easier time.

Benefits of ranged builds include:

  • More time to react to attacks.
  • Safer positioning.
  • Less exposure to Poison Spew and Jump Slam.
  • Consistent damage while staying mobile.

That said, melee builds can still defeat Grey Hunter effectively by mastering deflections and posture breaks.

Tips for Defeating Grey Hunter Faster

A few things helped me make this fight much more consistent:

Focus on Deflections

The posture system is incredibly important in this fight. Every successful deflection gets you closer to a posture break and a huge damage opportunity.

Don’t Rush After a Knockdown

If the boss hits you with a slam, resist the urge to immediately charge back in. Heal, reposition, and wait for a safe opening.

Learn the Animations

Grey Hunter only has four primary attacks. After a few attempts, you’ll start recognizing each move before it happens, making the encounter far less threatening.

Stay Patient

Many players lose because they panic after dying once or twice. This boss is designed to teach combat fundamentals, and once you understand the attack patterns, it becomes one of the easier field bosses in the game.

Grey Hunter Rewards and Why It’s Worth Farming

Grey Hunter is one of the earliest field bosses that encourages players to learn core combat mechanics such as dodging, deflecting, and posture management. Even if you don’t defeat it on your first attempt, spending time learning the encounter will make future bosses much easier to handle.

Think of Grey Hunter less as a gear check and more as a skill check.

Grey Hunter may be classified as an early-game boss, but it still demands attention and proper timing. Head to the Soul Society Outskirts, wait for the correct spawn window, and focus on learning each of the boss’s four attacks.

Once you start deflecting claw attacks, dodging Poison Spew, avoiding the Jump Slam, and sidestepping the Cero Beam, the fight becomes surprisingly straightforward. After a few runs, you’ll likely wonder why the boss seemed difficult in the first place.
