When you first jump into Drain the Lake, it seems almost too simple—fill a bucket, dump the water, and repeat. But after a few minutes, you’ll realize there’s a lot more going on. Between upgrades, buckets, checkpoints, badges, and permanent progression, making the right choices early can save you hours of grinding later.

If you’re just getting started, this guide covers everything you need to know, along with a few tips I wish I knew before my first run.

The Goal of Drain the Lake

The story is surprisingly funny.

Your character accidentally drops their phone into the lake. Instead of diving in to retrieve it, they decide the logical solution is to drain the entire lake.

That’s exactly what you’ll spend your time doing—removing water little by little until you eventually reach the bottom.

How the Basic Gameplay Works

Every run follows the same gameplay loop:

  1. Equip your bucket.
  2. Fill it with water from the lake.
  3. Teleport to the drain station.
  4. Empty the bucket to earn Tokens.
  5. Spend Tokens on upgrades.
  6. Repeat until you’ve drained enough water to progress deeper.

At first it feels slow, but once you unlock upgrades, the pace increases dramatically.

How to Fill Your Bucket

To collect water:

  • Equip your bucket.
  • Stand near the lake.
  • Point your cursor directly at the water.
  • Hold or repeatedly click the left mouse button until the bucket fills.

One thing that catches new players off guard is that your cursor must actually be pointing at the water. If nothing is happening, you’re probably aiming slightly above or beside the lake.

Use the Teleport Shortcut

Instead of running back every single time, press F to teleport directly to the drain station.

This small shortcut saves a surprising amount of time over the course of a run, especially once your bucket starts holding more water.

Understanding Tokens and Gems

Drain the Lake has two different currencies, and knowing the difference is important.

Tokens

Tokens are earned during each run by draining water.

You’ll spend them on temporary upgrades like:

  • Bucket Capacity
  • Bucket Fill Speed
  • Movement Speed
  • Other run-specific improvements

Once your run ends, your Tokens disappear and you’ll start fresh next time.

Gems

Gems are your permanent currency.

Unlike Tokens, Gems stay with your account even after the run ends.

You can earn Gems by:

  • Opening treasure chests
  • Completing badges
  • Claiming badge rewards in the lobby

These should be saved for permanent unlocks, especially new buckets.

Best Early Upgrades

If you’re wondering where to spend your first Tokens, prioritize Movement Speed.

It might not sound exciting, but faster movement means:

  • Less time running between the lake and drain station.
  • More bucket trips every minute.
  • Faster Token farming.
  • Faster overall progression.

Once your movement speed feels comfortable, start investing in:

  • Bucket Capacity
  • Bucket Fill Speed

Together, these upgrades make each trip much more efficient.

Your Bucket Has More Range Than You Think

Here’s a tip the game doesn’t explain very well.

You don’t need to stand directly inside the lake to collect water.

As long as:

  • Your bucket is equipped.
  • Your cursor is touching the water.

You’ll continue filling your bucket.

This becomes extremely useful later because dangerous creatures can appear in the lake, making it much safer to collect water from a short distance.

Don’t Skip Checkpoints

As the lake gets lower, you’ll discover checkpoint stations.

They’re easy to spot thanks to the flag mast sticking out of the water.

Always activate them.

If something goes wrong later in the run, you’ll respawn much closer instead of starting from the very beginning.

How Runs Work

One thing every new player should understand is that Drain the Lake is run-based.

Every time you start a new match:

  • The lake resets.
  • Your run progress resets.
  • Your temporary upgrades reset.

Only your permanent progress carries over, such as:

  • Gems
  • Buckets
  • Badge progress
  • Permanent unlocks

That’s why each run feels faster than the last—you aren’t starting completely from scratch.

Open Every Treasure Chest

Treasure chests are one of the easiest sources of Gems.

Whenever you spot one while exploring deeper areas, take a moment to grab it.

Those extra Gems quickly add up and help you unlock stronger buckets much sooner.

Why Better Buckets Matter

Your starting wooden bucket gets the job done, but you won’t want to use it forever.

New buckets purchased with Gems often include unique passive abilities that improve your efficiency.

Depending on the bucket, these bonuses can help you:

  • Drain water faster.
  • Improve overall farming speed.
  • Reach deeper sections more easily.
  • Complete future runs quicker.

Buying a stronger bucket is one of the biggest permanent upgrades you can make.

Complete Badges for Free Gems

Badges aren’t just achievements.

Every completed badge rewards Gems that can be claimed at the Badge Station in the lobby.

Many badges unlock naturally while playing, whether you’re:

  • Draining buckets.
  • Opening treasure chests.
  • Reaching new checkpoints.
  • Exploring deeper areas.

It’s worth checking the Badge Station after every few runs so you don’t leave free Gems unclaimed.

Unlock the Ancient Bucket

One of the best early milestone rewards comes from collecting badges.

After earning 10 badges, you’ll unlock the ability to claim the Ancient Bucket, giving you another permanent upgrade to help with future runs.

If you’re already close to ten badges, it’s definitely worth finishing the remaining objectives.

Drain the Lake does a great job of making every run feel rewarding. Even if you don’t make it all the way to the bottom, you’ll usually come away with more Gems, additional badges, or a stronger bucket that makes your next attempt noticeably easier.

The biggest piece of advice is to think long-term. Upgrade your movement speed early, grab every checkpoint you see, collect treasure chests whenever possible, and invest your Gems into better buckets. Before long, you’ll be draining the lake much faster than you did on your very first run—and getting closer to recovering that lost phone.
