If you’ve been trying to make Shade work in An Average Campaign, you’ve probably noticed two very different opinions. Some players think the class is overrated after the nerfs, while others still consider it one of the strongest solo classes in the game.

After spending time with the class, I’d say the truth is somewhere in the middle. Shade isn’t a character that wins simply by pressing its strongest skill. Instead, it’s all about building stacks, applying status effects, and timing your abilities correctly. Once everything comes together, your damage skyrockets and bosses can disappear in a single detonation.

This guide focuses entirely on solo play. If you’re playing with a party, some stat priorities and ability choices change quite a bit.

An Average Campaign Shade Solo Build Guide – Best Build, Stats, Boons, Gear & Strategy

For solo runs, your build should focus on:

  • High Dexterity
  • Dodge Chance
  • Sustained healing
  • Multiple status effects
  • Powerful Detonations

Rather than relying on raw burst damage, this build gradually builds Void Darts before finishing enemies with a devastating Detonation.

Best Race for Shade

Choosing the right race gives you a strong start.

Wither (Best Overall)

If you have access to Wither, this is the strongest option.

Why it’s the best:

  • Excellent sustain.
  • More healing throughout runs.
  • Safer during long boss fights.
  • Great survivability for solo players.

Because solo runs don’t have teammates to save you, extra healing is incredibly valuable.

Dwarf

If you don’t own Wither, Dwarf is another excellent choice.

Benefits include:

  • Better durability.
  • Higher survivability.
  • Easier early-game progression.

Human

Human is the most offensive alternative.

Its passive increases your highest stat by 5%, which will usually be Dexterity.

If you prefer dealing more damage instead of playing safely, Human is a solid option.

Best Permanent Upgrades

When upgrading your account progression, prioritise:

  • Trained Killer
  • Maximum Health
  • Gold income

Trained Killer

This should be your first priority.

The extra damage helps throughout the entire run.

Health

More Health means more room for mistakes during difficult encounters.

Gold

Gold becomes surprisingly useful because you’ll eventually spend large amounts on healing potions before the final boss.

Best Boons for Shade

These are the strongest Boons for solo Shade.

Predation

Predation greatly increases the damage dealt by your Detonation.

Since Shade revolves around building Void Darts before exploding them, Predation naturally becomes one of the strongest damage boosts available.

True Strike

This Boon is almost mandatory.

Without it, unlucky misses can completely ruin your burst combo.

True Strike ensures your Void Darts connect much more consistently, making your damage reliable instead of random.

Well Rested

Well Rested provides incredible sustain between encounters.

After each fight you’ll recover a large amount of Health, reducing the number of healing items you’ll need throughout a run.

For solo players, this is one of the most valuable survival tools available.

Spiteful (Alternative)

Spiteful places Grudge on enemies that damage you.

If you defeat them before the effect expires:

  • You heal.
  • You deal increased damage against them.

It’s another strong sustain option if you don’t mind a more aggressive playstyle.

Keen Eye

If you don’t have Spiteful, Keen Eye works well alongside Well Rested.

The additional accuracy and consistency fit nicely into Shade’s gameplay.

Stat Priority

One of the biggest mistakes newer Shade players make is investing into Intelligence too early.

Go Full Dexterity

For solo runs, every level should go into Dexterity.

Dexterity provides:

  • Higher damage
  • Better dodge chance
  • Increased survivability

Although Intelligence becomes stronger later, surviving the early and mid-game is much more important.

Party Builds Are Different

If you’re playing with teammates, Intelligence becomes much more viable.

Many party players transition into Intelligence after unlocking Shade.

For solo play, however, sticking with Dexterity is significantly safer.

Best Early Gear

Several crafted items make the early game much easier.

Red Hide Hood

One of the strongest early helmets.

Benefits include:

  • Dexterity
  • Dodge Chance
  • Critical Damage

Silk Striders

Instead of Leather Boots, aim for Silk Striders.

They provide better overall stats and only require Spider Webs to craft.

Bone Plated Chestplate

A reliable defensive upgrade during the mid-game.

Craft it whenever possible if nothing stronger is available.

Drifter Hat

Eventually replace your Red Hide Hood with the Drifter Hat.

It offers a significant increase to critical damage, making your late-game burst much stronger.

Important Crafting Materials

Several crafting materials are especially valuable for Shade.

Always keep an eye out for:

  • Glass Vials
  • Hive Skins
  • Spider Webs
  • Spider Eyes
  • Ectoplasm
  • Red Scales

Many of Shade’s strongest upgrades depend on these materials.

Glass Vials Are Extremely Important

Glass Vials are arguably the most important crafting material for this build.

You’ll use them to create powerful status-effect bottles.

Examples include:

  • Necrosis
  • Hivekin
  • Moonkin

Each bottle adds another status effect to enemies.

More status effects mean your Detonation deals dramatically higher damage.

If you find Glass Vials in shops, buy them immediately.

Understanding Void Darts

Shade’s entire combat system revolves around Void Darts.

As you build Void Reserves, your next Void Dart ability throws additional projectiles.

For example:

  • 2 reserves = 2 Void Darts
  • 5 reserves = 5 Void Darts
  • 10 reserves = 10 Void Darts

More darts mean more status effects and much larger Detonations.

Sinking Shadows

Once unlocked, Sinking Shadows becomes your most important defensive ability.

Benefits include:

  • Reduces incoming damage.
  • Generates additional Void Darts whenever you’re hit.
  • Makes boss fights much safer.

From this point onward, almost every fight should begin with Sinking Shadows.

Abyssal Mark

Abyssal Mark shines during multi-enemy fights.

After marking an enemy:

  • Your Void Darts prioritise that target.
  • You can quickly eliminate dangerous enemies before dealing with weaker ones.

Against bosses, it’s an excellent setup tool before unloading your entire combo.

Combat Rotation

A simple combat sequence looks like this:

  1. Activate Sinking Shadows.
  2. Guard while building Void Darts.
  3. Reach around 5–7 Void Darts.
  4. Use Void Darts.
  5. Finish with Detonation.

This maximises both your status effects and burst damage.

Managing Boss Fights

Bosses require a little more patience.

Instead of firing Void Darts immediately:

  • Build several Void Darts first.
  • Heal when necessary.
  • Keep Sinking Shadows active.
  • Wait until you’ve applied multiple status effects.
  • Finish with Detonation.

The longer setup usually results in far more total damage.

Spend Your Gold Before the Final Boss

Once you’ve reached the final area and no longer need crafting materials, sell any spare items you’re carrying.

Use the gold to purchase:

  • Healing Potions
  • Utility Potions

There’s little reason to hoard gold once the run is almost over.

General Tips

A few small habits make a noticeable difference during solo runs:

  • Always prioritise Glass Vials when shops offer them.
  • Keep investing every level into Dexterity.
  • Replace early gear with Drifter equipment when available.
  • Use Guard to safely build Void Darts.
  • Don’t rush your Detonation—more status effects mean significantly higher damage.
  • Stock up on Healing Potions before entering the final encounter.

Although Shade isn’t quite as overwhelming as it was before balance changes, it’s still one of the strongest solo classes in An Average Campaign when built correctly. Its damage scales incredibly well once you begin stacking status effects through Glass Vials and combining them with Void Darts and Detonation.

The class does require more planning than some other options, especially in the early game where you’re waiting for key abilities like Sinking Shadows, but once your build comes together, the payoff is huge. If you manage your resources well, prioritise Dexterity, and collect the right crafting materials, Shade remains an excellent choice for players looking to clear solo runs consistently.
