Choosing the right race in The Veil can make a noticeable difference depending on the type of build you want to play. Some races are much better for magic, while others focus on summoning, tanking damage, movement, or general combat power.

Not every race is equally useful, though. A race with a strong bonus can sometimes come with a downside that makes it difficult to use effectively. That is why I recommend choosing your race based on your build instead of simply picking one because of its rarity.

In this tier list, I will go through the best races in The Veil, explain what each one does, and help you decide which race is worth using for your character.

S Tier – Whaleborn

Whaleborn is currently the strongest overall race in this tier list.

Its biggest advantage comes from the Dusk Weaver passive, which allows you to reach maximum Weave at only four stacks instead of the usual five. Each stack provides 7.5% universal damage and speed, meaning Whaleborn can reach a total 30% boost.

By comparison, the normal five-stack version only reaches a 25% boost.

That faster scaling makes a huge difference during combat. You can reach your maximum power sooner while also receiving bonuses that work across different types of builds.

Whaleborn also has a night-only ability called Night Color. The main downside is a 10% Insanity penalty, but considering how much offensive power and speed the race provides, the drawback is relatively small.

If you want the best overall race that works well across multiple builds, Whaleborn is the top choice.

A Tier – Goblin

Goblin is one of the best choices for magic builds.

The race provides:

  • 20% Luck
  • 10% Cast Damage
  • 10% Cast Cooldown Reduction

This combination is extremely useful for players who rely heavily on spells. Your abilities deal more damage, and the cooldown reduction allows you to cast more frequently.

The Luck bonus is another nice benefit on top of its combat advantages.

If you are building your character around magic, Goblin is easily one of the strongest races available.

A Tier – Abolites

Abolites is a strong option for tanky builds.

It provides 10% Resistance, 10% Stone Resistance, and 15% Knockback, although you lose 10% movement speed.

The race also has the Exert Energy skill. This ability can give you additional resistance, but it makes you slower while active. Once the effect ends, you can also receive temporary penalties to regeneration and stamina regeneration.

Because of those drawbacks, Abolites is not ideal for players who prefer fast and aggressive gameplay.

However, if your goal is to absorb damage and build a durable character, it is an excellent choice.

A Tier – Gem Head

Gem Head is one of the best races for dedicated summoner builds.

It provides:

  • 10% Summon Damage
  • 15% Summon Life

This makes your summons stronger while also helping them survive longer.

The bonuses are very specialized, so Gem Head is not necessarily the best option for every build. However, if your character relies heavily on summons for damage, there are very few reasons to choose another race.

For summoners, Gem Head is one of the easiest A-tier recommendations.

A Tier – Underling

Underling is another powerful race for magic players.

Its bonuses include:

  • 15% Cast Damage
  • 10% Regeneration
  • 25% Fire Resistance

The 15% Cast Damage bonus makes it particularly strong for players who want to maximize their spell damage.

Unlike some offensive races, Underling also gives you useful defensive and sustain bonuses. The regeneration helps with survivability, while the Fire Resistance can be valuable in certain situations.

If your priority is raw magic damage, Underling may be even more appealing than Goblin.

B Tier – Mushling

Mushling is a decent choice for players who prefer sustain.

The race gives you 10% Regeneration and 10% Healing, allowing your character to recover more effectively during longer fights.

The downside is a 10% reduction to Stamina Regeneration, which can become annoying depending on your playstyle.

Mushling also has the Decompose skill, giving the race more utility than it previously had.

It is not one of the strongest overall races, but the extra sustain makes it a solid B-tier option.

B Tier – Rat

Rat is a simple race, but its ability can occasionally save you from taking damage.

Every incoming hit has a 5% chance to completely miss.

That means roughly one out of every 20 attacks could deal no damage at all.

The effect is entirely chance-based, so you cannot rely on it consistently. Sometimes it may save you during an important fight, while other times it may not activate when you need it.

Still, the passive is useful enough to make Rat a respectable B-tier choice.

B Tier – Human

Human is the basic race and focuses on scaling your health through Prestige.

You receive five additional HP for every Prestige.

For example, after reaching 10 Prestiges, you would have an additional 50 HP.

The bonus is not as flashy as the abilities offered by stronger races, but it continues scaling as you progress.

Human is a reasonable choice for players who want a straightforward health increase without dealing with complicated mechanics.

C Tier – Haveling

Haveling has some useful bonuses, but its day and night mechanics make it inconsistent.

During the night, it gives you:

  • 10% Resistance
  • 10% Extra Damage

However, during the day, you receive 10% negative Resistance, while your Attack Speed is reduced by 10%.

The nighttime bonuses can be useful when farming mobs, but losing attack speed is a significant drawback for many builds.

Because its effectiveness depends heavily on the time of day, Haveling is difficult to rank higher.

C Tier – Skeleton

Skeleton provides:

  • 10% Movement Speed
  • 10% Summon Damage
  • 10% Negative Resistance

The movement speed is useful, and summoner builds can benefit from the additional damage.

However, the resistance penalty is a serious weakness. Skeleton also struggles because Gem Head provides much better bonuses for dedicated summoners.

Unless you specifically want the extra movement speed, there are generally stronger options available.

Best Race for Every Build in The Veil

If you want a quick recommendation, this is how I would choose between the races:

  • Best Overall: Whaleborn
  • Best Magic Race: Underling
  • Best Magic Alternative: Goblin
  • Best Summoner Race: Gem Head
  • Best Tank Race: Abolites
  • Best Sustain Race: Mushling
  • Best Beginner Option: Human
  • Best RNG Defensive Option: Rat

Whaleborn takes the top spot because its Weave mechanic provides an enormous amount of value. Reaching maximum stacks faster while gaining universal damage and speed makes it useful for almost every type of character.

For more specialized builds, your choice becomes easier. Underling and Goblin are excellent for magic, Gem Head is the clear choice for summoners, and Abolites works well for players who want a tankier character.

The most important thing is to choose a race that actually supports your build. A race can be ranked highly overall but still be worse for your character than a lower-ranked race designed specifically around your playstyle.
