The Class Mastery system has finally arrived in Dead Rails, and honestly, this is one of those updates that changes how you’ll want to think about your favorite classes.

The system had been delayed for a very long time, so finally seeing it added to the game is a pretty big deal. Instead of simply choosing a class and using it as-is, you can now level up that class through Mastery, unlock permanent passive bonuses, and eventually gain new abilities that you can equip.

The system is still being rolled out, too. Right now, only four classes have Mastery, with more expected to be added gradually.

So, if you’re wondering what Class Mastery actually does, which classes currently have it, and what you unlock by leveling them, here’s everything you need to know.

Dead Rails Class Mastery Update Guide – Mastery Levels

Class Mastery is essentially a progression system attached to individual classes.

When you open the Classes menu, you’ll notice a new Mastery button on classes that support the system.

Clicking it takes you to that class’s Mastery progression screen.

For example, with the Vampire class, you can see your current Mastery level, the amount of XP required to reach the next level, and the rewards waiting for you as you progress.

The Mastery system currently goes from Level 0 to Level 10.

As you level up, you don’t simply receive cosmetic rewards. You actually become stronger because the class gains new passive abilities and active abilities.

That means a fully mastered class can play very differently from the same class at Mastery Level 0.

How Mastery Levels Work

When you start a class at Mastery Level 0, you have access to the basic version of that class.

As you gain Mastery XP and progress through the levels, additional bonuses become available.

These rewards can include:

  • Passive class improvements
  • Increased damage
  • Reduced class weaknesses
  • New active abilities
  • Utility effects
  • Special movement abilities
  • Defensive abilities

The exact bonuses depend on the class you’re mastering.

The important thing is that Mastery is tied to the individual class.

So, leveling up Vampire Mastery doesn’t automatically level up Doctor, Cowboy, or any other class.

Vampire Class Mastery

The Vampire currently looks like one of the strongest Mastery options.

At low Mastery levels, Vampire still has its normal weakness to sunlight.

If you walk into the sun without having fully mastered the class, you’ll continue taking damage.

But once you push Vampire all the way through its Mastery progression, that weakness can essentially disappear.

At maximum Mastery, the Vampire can move around in sunlight without taking the usual damage.

That’s a massive upgrade.

The class also receives bonuses that improve its effectiveness with melee weapons, making the Vampire even more dangerous when fighting enemies up close.

So you’re not just removing one of the class’s biggest weaknesses. You’re also making the class more effective in combat.

Vampire Mastery Abilities

Vampire gets two active abilities through its Mastery progression.

The first is a movement-based ability that lets you launch yourself forward.

This gives the Vampire a much more aggressive playstyle because you can quickly close the distance between yourself and enemies.

It can also be useful for escaping dangerous situations.

Considering how quickly you can move around with the ability, normal enemies can have trouble keeping up with you.

The second Vampire ability is even more interesting.

It allows you to become invisible for a period of time.

While invisible, you also don’t take damage from sunlight, and enemies can essentially ignore you.

There are limitations, though.

The effect eventually ends on its own, and attacking enemies can also cancel the ability.

That means it’s not simply a permanent invisibility button. You’ll need to use it strategically if you’re trying to sneak past enemies or survive a dangerous section of the map.

How to Equip Mastery Abilities

Once you’ve unlocked the abilities for a class, you can open the Mastery menu and select them.

The Mastery screen shows which abilities you’ve unlocked and whether they’re currently equipped.

You can use the buttons on the right side of the interface to equip or change your abilities.

This is important because the system doesn’t just throw every ability onto your character at once.

Instead, you unlock abilities as you progress and then choose which ones you want to equip.

That gives you some control over how your mastered class plays.

Miner Class Mastery

The Miner is another class that received a Mastery progression system.

Miner gets two active abilities.

The first is a ground slam style attack.

When activated, your character slams the ground and deals damage to enemies around the impact area.

It isn’t necessarily the biggest damage ability in the game, but it’s useful when you’re surrounded or fighting several enemies at close range.

There’s also a limitation on how frequently you can spam it.

You can use the ability four times, after which you have to wait for its cooldown before using it again.

So it’s better to think of it as a burst ability rather than something you can continuously spam.

The second Miner ability provides additional information about enemies.

It can help reveal or identify enemies that are outside your normal range, giving you more awareness of what’s around you.

For a class that spends a lot of time dealing with dangerous enemies and exploring areas where threats can appear unexpectedly, that extra information can be surprisingly useful.

Miner Ground Slam in Combat

The Ground Slam is particularly useful when several enemies get close together.

Activate it while enemies are around you and you’ll hit them with the area attack.

The damage isn’t enormous, but that’s not necessarily the point.

Its real value comes from having another tool for dealing with groups of enemies and giving the Miner additional combat utility.

You also have four uses before needing to wait for the cooldown, so managing those charges is important.

Doctor Class Mastery

Doctor gets a very different type of Mastery because the class is focused heavily on supporting teammates.

One of the Doctor’s new abilities allows you to heal players around you.

This makes Doctor even more useful when playing with a group.

Instead of relying entirely on individual healing, you can activate the ability when several teammates are nearby and help keep everyone alive.

But the more impressive ability is the Mass Revive.

As the name suggests, this ability can revive dead players around you.

That’s potentially huge during difficult runs.

If several teammates go down, having a Doctor with the appropriate Mastery ability can completely change the situation.

Instead of the surviving player having to continue without their teammates, Doctor can bring multiple fallen players back into the fight.

Doctor Mastery Passives

The active abilities aren’t the only rewards.

As you level Doctor Mastery, you’ll also unlock additional passive abilities.

These passives make the class more effective over time and give you another reason to continue pushing toward higher Mastery levels.

So if you’re the person in your group who normally plays support, Doctor Mastery is definitely worth looking into.

Cowboy Class Mastery

The fourth class currently featured in the Mastery system is Cowboy.

Cowboy receives an ability called Quick Draw, and this one is probably one of the most satisfying abilities to watch in action.

When you activate Quick Draw, it automatically marks nearby enemies.

Once they’re marked, the ability fires at them rapidly, allowing you to blast multiple targets in a short amount of time.

Instead of manually aiming at every enemy one by one, Quick Draw handles the marking for you.

It’s particularly useful when you’re surrounded by several enemies and need to clear them quickly.

How Cowboy Quick Draw Works

The basic process is simple:

  1. Activate Quick Draw.
  2. The ability automatically marks enemies.
  3. The marked targets are attacked.
  4. Multiple enemies can be hit during the ability.

It gives Cowboy another strong burst option and fits the class’s gun-focused identity really well.

Which Class Has the Best Mastery?

If you’re asking which Mastery looks the strongest right now, Vampire is probably the standout.

The reason is simple: its Mastery doesn’t just give it a new attack.

It addresses one of the biggest problems with the Vampire class — sunlight.

At maximum Mastery, being able to move through the sun without taking damage is an enormous quality-of-life improvement.

Then you add the melee damage improvements, the forward-launch ability, and the invisibility ability, and Vampire starts looking extremely powerful.

The invisibility ability is especially useful because it gives you another way to avoid enemies instead of simply fighting everything in your path.

That said, the “best” Mastery will depend heavily on how you play.

If you normally support your team, Doctor could be more valuable.

If you’re focused on ranged combat, Cowboy may be the better fit.

And if you’re already comfortable playing Miner, the extra combat and information tools can make the class much more versatile.

Class Mastery Is Still Expanding

One thing worth remembering is that these aren’t necessarily the only Masteries we’ll ever see.

The current system has been introduced with four classes, and more classes are expected to receive Mastery over time.

So if your favorite class doesn’t have a Mastery button yet, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s being forgotten.

The developers appear to be rolling the system out gradually rather than giving every class its full progression tree at once.

That also means the Mastery system could become much bigger as future updates add new classes and abilities.

Should You Start Grinding Mastery?

Absolutely, especially if you already have a class you play regularly.

You’re essentially investing your time into making that class stronger while unlocking additional tools that can completely change how you approach a run.

Vampire players, in particular, have a lot to look forward to because the maximum Mastery bonuses can remove one of the class’s biggest weaknesses.

But don’t feel like you need to immediately grind every class.

I’d pick the class you enjoy the most and focus on mastering that one first.

Once you reach higher Mastery levels, you’ll have a stronger version of the class along with new abilities that can make your runs much more interesting.

For now, the Vampire, Miner, Doctor, and Cowboy are the classes to check if you want to try the new system.

And considering how long players have been waiting for Class Mastery to finally arrive in Dead Rails, it’s nice to see that it actually changes gameplay rather than simply adding another level counter to the menu
