The Potions Update has added one of the most entertaining features to 100 Days at Sea so far. Instead of simply gathering resources and surviving, you can now experiment with brewing potions that grant useful buffs, funny transformations, and some completely unexpected effects.
What I like most about this update is that it doesn’t hand everything to you immediately. You’ll have to unlock the Potion Table, collect special Essence drops from enemies, and slowly build your own recipe collection through experimentation. Some mixtures can help you survive longer, while others exist purely for laughs.
If you’ve just logged in after the update and aren’t sure where to begin, don’t worry. This guide covers everything you need to know, from unlocking the Potion Table to understanding how recipes, Essence, and potion discovery work.
100 Days at Sea Potions Update Guide – How to Unlock the Potion Table, Brew Potions & Discover Every Recipe
Before you can brew anything, you’ll first need to unlock the Potion Table.
The Potion Table becomes available once your Bonfire reaches Level 3.
After upgrading your Bonfire, you’ll see the Potion Table available to craft.
You’ll need:
- 5 Metal
- 10 Wood
- 1 Pirate NPC (required crafting material)
Once you’ve gathered everything, craft the Potion Table and place it anywhere around your base just like any other building.
This is where every potion in the game is brewed.
How the Potion Book Works
Interacting with the Potion Table opens a recipe book that’s divided into two sections.
Recipes
The right side contains potion recipes and brewing combinations.
Discovered
The left side starts completely empty.
Every time you successfully discover a valid potion, it gets permanently added to this page, making it much easier to craft again later without guessing the ingredients.
It’s a nice progression system because your recipe collection slowly grows as you play.
Two Types of Potions
Not every combination creates a proper potion.
The update actually has two different outcomes when brewing.
Normal Potions
These are successful recipes.
Once brewed, they’ll be saved in your Discovered page and can be recreated whenever you have the required ingredients.
Most of these provide buffs, movement abilities, or special transformations.
Wonky Potions
If you throw random ingredients together without creating a valid recipe, you’ll usually end up with a Wonky Potion.
These don’t get added to your recipe collection, but they’re far from useless.
Instead, they trigger goofy and hilarious effects that are mostly there for fun.
For example, one Wonky Potion can literally transform your character into a crab for a short period.
When you drink any potion, an effect icon appears on your screen showing exactly how long the effect will remain active.
How to Get Essence
Essence is one of the most important materials introduced in the update.
Many potion recipes require Essence alongside normal resources.
The only way to obtain it is by defeating enemies.
Every enemy has a chance to drop Essence after being defeated.
It’s important to remember that these aren’t guaranteed drops, so don’t be surprised if you defeat several enemies before seeing one.
Different enemies can drop different Essence types.
Some of the categories include:
- Attack Essence
- Defense Essence
- Healing Essence
- Utility Essence
- Several other specialized Essence types
The more enemies you fight, the larger your collection becomes, allowing you to experiment with more recipes.
Potion Effects You Can Discover
One of the best parts of this update is seeing what each potion actually does.
Some are incredibly useful, while others are just meant to make everyone laugh.
Here are some of the effects currently available.
Raft Teleport Potion
This potion instantly teleports you back to your raft after drinking it.
It’s surprisingly useful if you’ve wandered far away or simply want to return home quickly.
Crab Transformation
One of the funniest potions in the update.
Drink it, and your character temporarily transforms into a crab.
It doesn’t seem particularly useful for survival, but it’s definitely entertaining.
Tiny Potion
This potion shrinks your character into a miniature version of yourself.
It looks hilarious, although stacking multiple transformation effects can occasionally cause visual glitches or strange bugs.
If you’re experimenting, try not to combine too many unusual effects at once.
Giant Potion
The opposite of the Tiny Potion.
Instead of shrinking, your character becomes enormous.
Driving vehicles while giant creates some incredibly funny animations, especially if you’re using unusual vehicles like the UFO.
Pirate Ghost Potion
This potion transforms your character into a ghostly pirate.
It’s mostly cosmetic, but it’s one of the coolest-looking transformations added in the update.
Low Gravity Potion
As the name suggests, this potion lowers your gravity.
You’ll jump much higher and float longer than normal, making movement feel completely different for a while.
Immunity Potion
Probably one of the strongest practical potions currently available.
After drinking it, you’ll become immune to enemy damage for roughly 120 seconds.
That’s incredibly helpful during dangerous encounters or difficult fights.
Funny Effect Potions
Not every potion is designed to improve combat.
Some are simply made to be ridiculous.
One example repeatedly makes your character fart until the potion expires.
These kinds of effects don’t offer much gameplay value, but they’re perfect for having fun with friends.
Mixing Ingredients to Discover New Recipes
Unlike many crafting systems that reveal every recipe immediately, 100 Days at Sea encourages experimentation.
You can combine:
- Essence
- Food
- Fish
- Wood
- Metal
- Various crafting materials
- Other items found throughout the game
Some combinations create powerful buffs.
Others create transformation potions.
Some only produce Wonky Potions.
The fun comes from testing different combinations until you discover something entirely new.
Every successful recipe is automatically saved in your Discovered page, so you only need to figure it out once.
Utility Essence Example
One example shown in the update uses:
- Utility Essence (Yellow)
- Fish & Chips
Combining these creates a yellow potion that provides a 25% bonus effect, making it one of the first useful recipes many players will likely discover.
As more recipes are found by the community, your recipe collection will continue to grow.
Tips for the Potions Update
If you’re just getting started, these tips will save you some time:
- Upgrade your Bonfire to Level 3 as early as possible.
- Farm enemies regularly since Essence is chance-based.
- Keep every type of Essence instead of throwing extras away.
- Test different ingredient combinations whenever you unlock new materials.
- Don’t ignore Wonky Potions—they’re often the funniest part of the update.
- Watch the effect timer icon so you know when a potion wears off.
- Avoid stacking too many transformation effects since they may occasionally bug your character.
The Potions Update adds much more than another crafting station. It introduces an entirely new progression system built around experimenting, collecting Essence, and discovering recipes on your own.
I especially like that the game doesn’t reveal everything from the start. Finding a brand-new potion by mixing random ingredients feels rewarding, and even failed experiments can lead to hilarious moments thanks to the Wonky Potions.
Whether you’re looking for powerful effects like temporary immunity, convenient abilities like raft teleportation, or simply want to turn into a crab for a few minutes, there’s plenty to experiment with. If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in 100 Days at Sea, building your recipe collection should definitely become one of your long-term goals.
