You load into Dead Rails expecting a normal run… and suddenly there’s a massive refinery crawling with fire zombies, a new boss waiting inside, and a flamethrower that sounds amazing on paper but plays very differently in reality.

This update is one of those that looks simple at first, but once you actually explore it, there are a few things you really need to understand — especially if you don’t want to get overwhelmed or waste resources.

Let’s go step-by-step so you know exactly what’s worth your time.

Training Building Overhaul (Big Quality Upgrade)

The training building got a complete redesign, and this is honestly one of the most underrated parts of the update.

What’s new inside:

  • You can now visually see trains in real-time
  • A dashboard shows train speed
  • Interactive area instead of a basic menu

There’s also an NPC inside.

What the NPC does:

  • Opens the old train selection menu
  • Lets you check:
    • Speed
    • Acceleration
    • Fuel consumption

Even better — you can preview trains you don’t own.

Before, choosing a train felt like guessing. Now you can actually see what you’re picking. Small change, but it makes decisions way easier.

New Location – Oil Refinery (Main Content)

This is the highlight of the update.

The Oil Refinery is a brand-new point of interest, and it’s not a safe one.

What you’ll find:

  • Fire zombies everywhere
  • A Mini Boss
  • Kerosene (important for flamethrower)

Important warning

The refinery can spawn near towns.

Which means:

  • You might pull two groups of enemies at once
  • Things can spiral quickly if you rush in

Best approach

  • Clear outer zombies first
  • Don’t rush the center immediately
  • Keep an escape route ready

Fire Zombies (New Enemy Type)

These are not just reskinned enemies.

What makes them different:

  • Fire-based attacks
  • More aggressive behavior
  • Can overwhelm you in groups

They’re not insanely tanky, but the real danger is numbers + positioning.

Mini Boss (Easier Than Expected)

You’ll find the boss inside the refinery.

Now here’s the surprising part…

It’s not as deadly as it looks.

What to expect:

  • Decent health pool
  • Doesn’t one-shot you
  • Can be handled with basic weapons

Simple strategy:

  • Hit → move back
  • Repeat

You don’t need anything fancy here. Just don’t panic and overcommit.

Flamethrower (New Weapon… but…)

This is the most hyped part of the update — and also the most disappointing.

On paper:

  • Area damage
  • Fire effect
  • Perfect for crowds

In reality:

  • Extremely fast ammo drain
  • Low damage output
  • Not efficient even in groups

Real test results:

  • ~25–30% fuel used per zombie
  • 5 zombies = full tank gone
  • Fire effect doesn’t last long

Verdict:

Right now, it’s not worth relying on.

You can use it for fun, but not for serious combat.

How to Reload Flamethrower (Very Important)

This is not obvious at all, and most players get stuck here.

You CANNOT reload normally.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Find Kerosene Oil (glass bottle)
  2. Drop it on the ground
  3. Place the flamethrower over it

That’s how it refills.

Problem:

  • Slow process
  • Not practical in combat

This update brings a really solid new location and improves the training system a lot — both are great additions.

The refinery itself is fun, especially when you manage enemy waves properly.

But the flamethrower?
Right now, it feels unfinished.

  • Too weak
  • Too resource-heavy
  • Too inconvenient to reload

If it gets buffed later, it could become one of the best weapons in the game. But in its current state, it’s more of a novelty than a real tool.
