The latest Dead Rails update introduces several new features, including a nightmare difficulty mode, new landmarks like Sterling Town, new enemies, a treasure-filled secret cave, and new game mechanics like horse carts and item rotation. This Dead Rails Sterling Town Update will walk you through everything added in this update and how you can take advantage of these new features.
Dead Rails New Update Sterling Town, New Treasures
Nightmare Mode – A Hardcore Challenge
A brand-new difficulty mode called Nightmare Mode has been introduced. However, you must win a game at least once to unlock it.
What Changes in Nightmare Mode?
Less loot – Fewer supplies available.
No passive health regeneration – You won’t heal over time.
Stronger enemies – Zombies deal more damage and have higher health.
More bonds upon completion – If you survive, the rewards are higher.
Auto-return to lobby – If you haven’t unlocked Nightmare Mode before the timer runs out, you’ll be sent back to the lobby.
Horse Cart – A New Way to Carry Items
You can now attach a horse cart to your horse and use it to transport items across the map.
How to Use the Horse Cart
Find a horse cart – Spawns in the farm building (or always at the base in the test server).
Attach it to a horse – Place the cart at the back of the horse.
Load items – Use the Z button to secure them.
No more dropping – Items won’t fall off as long as they’re attached properly.
Detach the cart – Drag the horse to separate the cart.
This feature is similar to A Dusty Trip’s car trailer but specifically designed for horses.
New Inventory Quick Features
Ammo Box Shortcut – You can now drop revolver and shotgun ammo quickly using the ammo button in your inventory.
Armor Removal – Click on your character’s image in the inventory to remove helmets and armor pieces without resetting your character.
Mining and Selling Ores
Mining is now possible in Dead Rails with the introduction of gold, silver, and coal ores.
How to Mine Ores
Use a pickaxe (from the Miner class) – Mining with melee weapons takes too long.
Gold Ore → Yields gold nuggets ($47 each)
Silver Ore → Yields silver nuggets ($15 each)
Coal Ore → Used for fueling trains but not sellable at the Trading Post.
New Zombie Variants
Several new zombie types have been added, making the game more challenging.
Armored Zombies – Harder to kill; aim for the legs for an easy takedown.
Exploding Zombies – Zombies that carry dynamite and explode on death.
Cowboy Zombies – Carry revolvers but have poor aim.
Wolf Taming – A New Companion
You can now tame wolves by feeding them zombie corpses.
Wolf Behavior
- Once tamed, wolves won’t attack you anymore.
- They don’t follow you yet (feature may improve in future updates).
- Wolves attack zombies but have low health and can die easily.
Sterling Town – A New Landmark with Hidden Treasures
A new abandoned town has been added to the game. Inside Sterling Town, you can find money bonds, loot, and a secret cave filled with treasures.

- Church Building – Holds a Jade Tablet needed for the secret cave.
- Yellow House – Contains a lore note about someone leaving for San Antonio.

A hidden cave behind the church is filled with traps, treasures, and enemies.
How to Enter the Cave
- Find the entrance – Located behind the church.
- Use dynamite – Blow up the wooden plank blocking the entrance.
- Prepare for battle – New skeleton miners and explosive zombies spawn inside.
Treasures Inside the Cave
- Gold and Silver Bars – Valuable loot.
- Mysterious Mask – A powerful item that reanimates enemies to fight for you.
- Jade Sword – A melee weapon with a 50% chance to turn zombies into allies.
Secret Gate & Fourth Jade Tablet
- Collect four Jade Tablets to unlock a hidden gate.
- The fourth tablet is behind an overturned cart in the cave.
- Inside the secret room, you’ll find more gold bars, silver bars, and a Jade Sword.

Conductor Class Buff & Other Changes
Conductor Class Health Buff – Increased from 4 hits to 7 hits against zombies, making it viable for solo players again.
Flying Horse Glitch Removed – The popular flying horse exploit has been patched.
Ironclad Class Speed – No noticeable buffs or nerfs.
New Challenge Missions
Three new challenge missions have been added:
- Gunslinger – Collect 20 guns.
- Tycoon – Earn $1,000 in-game.
- Zombie Hunter – Kill 200 zombies.
