If you just updated Guilty Gear Strive and jumped into a match… you probably felt it immediately. Something feels different. And yeah — this isn’t a small patch. This is one of those updates where the entire flow of the game shifts.
So instead of getting overwhelmed, let’s walk through the 5 biggest changes you actually need to understand to play properly.
1. Counter Blitz
This is the headline mechanic replacing Wild Assault.
Here’s how it works:
- Land a counter hit that triggers slow motion
- Press forward + Dust (D)
- You activate a cinematic attack → big damage
If you’re near the wall:
- It leads to wall break + massive damage (150+ easily)
But here’s the important part most people miss:
This is NOT always your best combo option.
- If your character already has strong combos → use those
- If you get a weak counter hit (like anti-air or poke) → use Counter Blitz
Think of it as:
“Safe, high-value confirm when you don’t want to mess up.”
2. Throws & Backdash
This change is huge for neutral and pressure.
Before:
- You could whiff throw or backdash → Purple Roman Cancel (PRC) to stay safe
Now:
- That option is gone
What this means:
- Whiff a throw → you’re getting punished
- Backdash incorrectly → you’re exposed
So yeah… you actually have to commit now.
If you play:
- Strike/throw characters → adjust your pressure
- Defensive players → be smarter with backdash
3. Reversals (DPs & Supers)
This is probably the biggest gameplay shift.
- No more Roman Cancel on whiff
- No cancel on block
- No combo extension even on hit
- Much more punishable (like -40 or worse)
Translation?
If you throw out a DP and it gets blocked…
you’re eating a full combo. No escape.
This basically turns reversals into:
“All-in bets” instead of safe panic buttons
4. Command Grabs
This one changes how offense works completely.
Before:
- Command grabs were strong on wake-up pressure
Now:
- They lose to regular throws
So if someone wakes up and presses throw:
- Your command grab fails
- You get punished
This adds a new layer of mind games:
- Attack beats throw
- Throw beats command grab
- Command grab beats blocking
So yeah — you can’t autopilot oki anymore.
5. You NEED to Hit Training Mode
This isn’t optional.
This update didn’t just tweak numbers — it changed:
- Combo routes
- Frame data
- Character tools
- System mechanics
Some characters even got:
- New moves
- New combo extensions
- New juggle routes
So even if you’ve played for months…
your old muscle memory might actually hurt you now.
Spend time in training mode:
- Test new combos
- Try Counter Blitz setups
- Learn new pressure strings
This patch rewards players who adapt fast.
If you keep playing like pre-2.0:
- You’ll get punished harder
- Your habits won’t work anymore
But if you:
- Use Counter Blitz smartly
- Respect new risks (throws, DPs)
- Learn your character again
You’ll feel the game open up in a really satisfying way.
